Enquête sur un mythe familial

Combattant de Garibaldi, Domenico Lorini perdit sa promise au retour de la guerre. Dès lors il abandonna naturellement tout pour le « Nouveau Monde ». De formation scientifique et s’installa comme apothicaire à La Paz. C’est en Bolivie qu’il s’intéressa aux propriétés curatives des plantes médicinales et plus particulièrement à la coca. Il parvint d’ailleurs à en extraire une boisson énergisante qui pourrait bien être encore mondialement consommé aujourd’hui.

A fighter for Garibaldi, Domenico Lorini lost his fiancée upon returning from the war. From that moment on, he naturally abandoned everything for the “New World.” With a scientific background, he settled as a pharmacist in La Paz. It was in Bolivia that he became interested in the healing properties of medicinal plants, particularly coca. In fact, he managed to extract an energising drink from it that could still be consumed globally today.

Pour réaliser ce projet plus intime que les précédents, je me suis rapprochée des sciences humaines. J’ai donc collaboré avec un Docteur en Histoire spécialiste de l’Italie du XIXe siècle. Il m’a guidée dans ma collecte d’archives et aiguillée sur un protocole de recherche qui m’a permise d’évoluer dans les méandres de la bibliothèque nationale de Rome. J’y ai rapidement rassemblé des lettres d’époque révélant nombres d’histoires semblables et restées inconnues. J’ai alors pris le parti de les mélanger, de les confondre et de m’y perdre comme on le ferait dans un rêve, aux frontières du mythe et de la réalité, de l’Histoire et de la fiction, de «l’ordre» du passé et du tumulte de l’avenir.

To create this project, which is more intimate than the previous ones, I turned to the humanities. I collaborated with a Doctor in History who specializes in 19th-century Italy. He guided me in my collection of archives and provided insights on a research protocol that allowed me to navigate the intricacies of the National Library of Rome. There, I quickly gathered period letters revealing many similar stories that had remained unknown. I decided to blend and confuse them, losing myself in them as one would in a dream, at the boundaries of myth and reality, history and fiction, the “order” of the past and the tumult of the future.

Libérée du poids de l’enquête cherchant à établir la véracité des faits, ma démarche s’orienta tout simplement sur l’exploration des zones grises de ce récit familial rocambolesque et pourtant parfois authentique. Je m’en sers comme prétexte pour m’aventurer dans ce gigantesque labyrinthe qu’est le mythe et le mettre en scène dans une installation sonore, vidéo et photographique : Par-delà le tropique du soleil.

Freed from the burden of investigating the truth of the facts, my approach shifted to simply exploring the gray areas of this bizarre yet sometimes authentic family narrative. I use it as a pretext to venture into the gigantic labyrinth of myth and to stage it in a sound, video, and photographic installation: Beyond the Tropic of the Sun.
