Biographie et statement
Je suis née à La Paz, capitale acrobate perchée à près de 4000 mètres d’altitude sur un versant de l’altiplano bolivien là où, en plein coeur des Andes, la cordillère entame une plongée subite vers les plaines de l’Amazonie. C’est un lieu minéral où la végétation racornie s’extirpe tant bien que mal de la roche et arrache obstinément sa vie à un sol d’argile desséché par le soleil sous le regard impassible des imposants glaciers qui en ont la garde : l’Illimani, le Mururata, le Huayna Potosi. C’est aussi, paradoxalement un creuset fertile de traditions, de rituels et de fêtes lors desquelles on fait offrande à la Pachamama et on accomplit la Ch’alla pour bénir voitures, habitations et commerces tous les ans pour carnaval. C’est autant ce syncrétisme que la splendeur de la nature qui inspirent aujourd’hui ma démarche artistique.
C’est ainsi que mon travail s’intéresse aux rapports de l’homme à la nature, aux interactions entre humains et non-humains et à la question de partage du territoire qui en découle. Bien souvent fruit de collaborations interdisciplinaires, mes oeuvres invitent à remettre en cause notre paradigme anthropocentrique pour percevoir différemment le monde qui nous entoure, repenser notre relation au vivant et redevenir capable d’accorder de l’importance à ce qui passe pour anodin.
Ainsi architecte de formation, j’aime composer avec les espaces, les dimensions et la lumière. Je les mets en scène dans des installations sculpturales. Parallèlement, j’accorde, dans mes oeuvres, une grande part au son, ce qui permet, en sollicitant l’ouïe, d’entrer dans une dimension plus immédiate et sensorielle et de se distancier de l’approche principalement analytique et réfléchie du regard. J’y mélange volontiers technologie et matériaux naturels ou recyclés. Curieuse du rapport au temps de la nature, je soumets couramment ces matériaux à des processus biologiques et chimiques d’altération et de décomposition pour en faire ressortir des textures visuelles ou sonores témoignant de ce renouvellement perpétuel de la vie.
Mon travail se développe au fil du temps à travers cinq projets majeurs : les forêts tropicales, les forêts sous-marines, le monde souterrain, le monde invisible, et le temps. Chacun de ces projets explore une facette spécifique de notre relation au vivant et à notre environnement.
I was born in La Paz, an acrobatic capital perched nearly 4,000 meters above sea level, on a slope of the Bolivian altiplano, where, in the heart of the Andes, the mountain range plunges suddenly toward the Amazon plains. It is a mineral place where withered vegetation struggles to extract life from the rock and stubbornly clings to existence in a clay soil dried out by the sun, under the impassive gaze of the imposing glaciers that stand guard: Illimani, Mururata, and Huayna Potosí. Paradoxically, it is also a fertile crucible of traditions, rituals, and festivals, where offerings are made to Pachamama, and the Ch’alla is performed to bless cars, homes, and businesses every year during carnival. It is both this syncretism and the splendor of nature that inspire my artistic approach today.
My work thus focuses on the relationship between humans and nature, on the interactions between humans and non-humans, and on the question of shared territory that arises from this. Often the result of interdisciplinary collaborations, my works invite us to challenge our anthropocentric paradigm, to perceive the world around us differently, to rethink our relationship with living beings, and to regain the ability to value what is often seen as insignificant.
As also an architect, I enjoy working with spaces, dimensions, and light, staging them in sculptural installations. At the same time, I place great emphasis on sound in my works, which, by engaging the sense of hearing, allows entry into a more immediate and sensory dimension, distancing us from the primarily analytical and thoughtful approach of sight. I like to mix technology with natural or recycled materials in my creations. Curious about nature’s relationship with time, I often subject these materials to biological and chemical processes of alteration and decomposition to bring out visual or auditory textures that testify to the perpetual renewal of life.
My work develops over time through five major projects: tropical forests, underwater forests, the underground world, the invisible world, and time. Each of these projects explores a specific aspect of our relationship with the living world and our environment.
